My sister sent me these images, taken at Wollongong (central east coast of Australia), February 2006. The fly has the gormless look of subfamily Tachininae or Goniinae, and I think it might be something like Microtropesa sp (sf Tachininae). Whatever it is, it impressed her greatly and it is indeed a pretty snazzy fly B) .
