The orange scutellum seems unusual, so I'm hoping it's distinctive.

Bosham, West Sussex, UK.

Amongst nettles etc, in shade of mature oak, between wheatfield and deep drainage ditch.

Housefly sized or thereabouts (7-9mm?)

17 May 2012.

Could be Huebneria sp?

(Edit - updated title from "Tachinidae" to "Carcelia tibialis" in response to sd's suggestion)

Above. Composite, so some dimensions may be off slightly.

More likely to be Carcelia tibialis. I've seen a few this week.

Thank you, updating title to match.

It's so much faster for British species, there are some benefits to being the most urbanised country in the world...
