This is not a good photo, but it is the only one I have of this subject. It was taken near Extrapieraz, Val d'Aosta, western Italian Alps in July, 1976. length should be near 10 mm.

A Platypalpus. We have seen more specimens of this huge genus op diptera.info today. Impossible to say which species.

Then it is Hybotidae and not Empididae. Indeed I didn't find any Empididae with such swollen femurs. Besides, probably I overestimated its length. Regarding the species, I am perfectly aware that even with much better photos it is not so easy to be able to determine it. Thanks a lot.
