HI

* locality - Silgueiros - Viseu - PORTUGAL
* date - 25.11.2006
* size - 4 mm (small fly)
* habitat - open land
* substrate - leaf of Castanea sativa

Nemopoda nitidula? Sepsidae fly almost sure. :)

I wonder why this fly has an ant appearance if this fly don?t catch ants... strange.

I don't think it is Nemopoda.
Australosepsis niviepennis looks more probable.

in another photo (almost the same appearance like this one) someone told that perhaps would be a Nemopoda nitidula... this one is perhaps Australosepsis niviepennis. So please tell me the characters clearly so I can try for myself to realize the differences that I must beware when I see Sepsidae flies.
Thank you, Nikita! And keep the excellent work and take great holidays in Thailand! Lucky you!!! :)

Hi Jorge.
Nemopoda has strong seta on cx2, which is almost never visible on photo.
But you fly has too thin abdomen waist for Nemopoda. In addition on your photo is clearly visible 2dc (Nemopoda has 1dc).
So, it is the same case as in your:

But I think that this fly (color and f1 shape) looks more like Australosepsis niviepennis.

Diptera.info Gallery is one of a few i-net source with Diptera images with realy verified ID.
I think, Jorge, that we have to do our best do not send in Gallery images with doubtfull ID, especially in cases like this one ? with one negative reply and no positive so far.

I agree totally with you. So I told to Paul to take off this photo until 100% confirmation. I think this was the only photo of mine that was misleading me and it is in gallery, so if doubtful, I agree with the take off photo.

I have very care with ID, but sometimes we made errors.

Thanks for your attention!
