Thank-you Nikita, with your confirmation I am now going to ask the Nearctic guru of Phoridae if he would be kind enough to comment on the genus or species ID.
I photographed these again today and this time I did measure them: only 2.4 mm from the front of the eyes to the rear of the wings.
