Thread subject: Diptera.info :: Calliphoridae??

Hi there,
Wonder if you could help identifying the species found in one of my amber pieces. I thought it might be a Calliphoridae, but am not sure. Also if so it would have been an existing specie over 30 million years ago as this is the age of the amber I'm getting (from the baltics).

I guess no one can tell even family from these photos, although the wing shape looks a bit like
Psychodidae ...

Some of the pictures of other flies on your site are much clearer, so I assume that this poor-quality shot is because of the texture of the piece. You may get a better picture by polishing one side of the stone, or by putting a drop of olive oil over the fly. (The olive oil fills in tiny surface cracks and has a refractive index close to amber. Apparently it can be wiped off with no long-term effects.)

I also think Psychodidae is the closest guess that could be made from such picture.
As Tony has already suggested, you should try to polish it. Also a camera with better macro function could help you to make better shots. And if you could use a binocular microscope with camera on it, you could yield really amazing photos! ;)
