Can anyone confirm whether these are syrphids? They were taken in French Guiana and are likely to be different species but I lumped them all here for brevity. Photos come from Stephane Brule :) Is there any chance of a tribe/sub-family?

Yes, subfamily Syrphinae.
On the 2nd picture are 2 larvae of Ocyptamus dimidiatus.
On the 3rd picture a larva of Ocyptamus gastrostactus.
I reared both species in Surinam. I don't know the other two.
Please encourage Stephane to try to rear them! This would produce so much new information!

Oh wow, thanks - great information there Menno - much more than I thought could be gained from photos of larvae :D

I will certainly try to get Stephane to collect and rear more material. I am also in touch with another entomologist out there who will twist his arm ... Stephane is a coleopterist so he does understand the importance of collecting but I think his time is limited and he does all of this as a hobby. :)
