From midwest Sweden 2006-07-09. I suspect it to be a
Dioctria sp. Any chance of an ID? TIA!

Dioctria. It's an asiline, possibly
Neomochtherus.

I've found a swedish diptera checklist from 2005 and no
Neomochtherus sp is on that list (which doesn't mean it can't be one). I've seen lists from Finland and Lithuania and the only species on their lists was
Neomochtherus pallipes. I found one photo if that (below), but it's seems lighter and the legs are yellow. It's possible that photo isn't right. I also found that in UK
N. pallipes is called "Devon red-legged robberfly" and my species has some red at least ...

Neoitamus socius. See a thread a week ago or so for discussion about
Neoitamus species. They are on the wing right now and a 'hot topic' :)
Disclaimer: Asilidae is not my speciality, but the general habitus is close enough (in my opinion). This species shares the doubtful honour of being the most common/most boring asilid with
Tolmerus atricapillus at least in southern Finland.

Neoitamus socius seems common enough according to the checklist, and recorded from this part of Sweden. I presume this is a male then (lacking the long pointed abdomen)!?
