hello everybody, it's the first time i visit this site and i love it so much! it's really a great site for one who loves insects! please keep on it!!
here is my question,
what is the most effective way to collect chrysomya bezzinana other than hand catching? :( what baits should i use, if using a trap, as this spp. like laying eggs on flesh wound only! thanks!

Hello Thomas,
Adult fly of Chrysomya bezziana (NOT bezzinana) feeds on decomposing corpses, decaying matter, excreta and flowers. Adult female only lays eggs on live mammals, depositing approximately 200 eggs at sites of wounding or in body orifices such as the ear and nose. Wounds in the size of a tick bite are sufficient to attract egg-laying. The eggs hatch in 24 hours and the resulting larvae burrow into the host's tissues and feed on the host's dead or living tissue. Chrysomya bezziana adults commonly visit faeces and decaying matters, so here's your answer. You should place a kind of trap that uses carrion or faeces as a bait. There are several types of traps which could be used! Look at this link http://www.verman...tem=60.701
Sorry, it?s only in Dutch, but this is called the professional butterfly trap. However, you can use it for flies as well.
You place the bait on the plate at the bottom of the trap, and the insects will fly up in the trap and can be collected!
Greetings

thanks! then i have a follow up question. it there any bait which can be more convenient to prepare? (you know..... faeces ar............;)) actually i have used animal liver as a bait, it seems doesn't work that blood is not the main criterion to attract this spp.

You might try dead fish...
