Thread subject: Diptera.info :: Empis tessellata? and a question

Sorry for adding to the already long list of id requests for this sp. (I've checked them all). Assuming this is Empis tessellata (I know you'll correct me), is identification straightforward or are there similar spp. to look out for? The experts never seem to have much trouble even from out of focus shots, but I assume that the key features aren't just 'big, dark and bristly'. Is there anything else to look for?

Photographed Devon, England; 18/5/2009

Thanks

Tim

This is indeed Empis tessellata and it is quite unique already because of its size. One of the few species with which small specimens can be confused is Empis sericans, in which the posterior vein of the fork in R4+5 is more bent backwards and which always has all black legs. Nice for you to know: SO ar it has not been recorded from Britain.

Thanks Paul, that's exactly what I wanted to know. Great forum BTW.
