I thought they were, but just wondered why the males looked so different, plus the male in the second photo is much smaller than the female.

There is a huge variation in size (mostly determined by food availability to larvae) and the colours may also vary considerably

Thanks for that Paul....there's no shortage of dung in Shetland.(almost named after the stuff)..the place is full of sheep, and there is a herd of 100+ cows in various parks around the Airport so the larvae should be well nourished...(typing this while having breakfast).
