This unknown dipteran pupa was found in a D-vac sample taken from low vegetation in orchard. The pupa was parasitised and the parasitoid had already emerged.

Paul -
I've come across these puparia before, though I've never reared anything from them. They remind me of the "flaxseed" puparium of Mayetolia (Cecidomyidae), so I've sent the images to Keith Harris who may recognise them. Mayetolia is one of the very few Nematocera to have a puparium.

Thanks Tony,

I have waited a while on these so a few more days should not make much difference. :)

Well, as it was, Keith Harris was not really happy about Mayetiola (he had "never seen one quite like this" ) and suggested I consult with another specialist. Whenever I will travel his way I will bring the specimen.

Checking Mayetiola images on the web I can understand Keith's hesitation. The pictured pupae do not have such lobes posteriorly. So, if someone has another suggestion: SHOOT!
