Did you come to any conclusions about this? Two possible benefits come to mind:

1: Damping turbulence of internal fluid due to rapid changes of direction in flight.
2: Proprioceptive sensing of fluid movements.

Is it known whether the small hairs on the outside of the fly have a sensory function? Or any function?
