With help from the thred H.albitarsis I have identified the attached as a Rhamphoromyia Sp. I'll put my head on the block and say I suspect it is R.sulcata but would be grateful for any advice.

It is a risky business to say anything about themales of species of the Rhamphomyia sulcata group without havinf the possibility to see the genitalia. Still, I think this may well be R. cinerascens (in Britain generally called subcinerascens but I have seen no true constant differences as yet).

Thankyou very much for that Paul. I am only to pleased to have got as far as a Rhamphomyia Sp. and have it confirmed.
