According to Tachi and Shima (2006), Phorinia "is characterised by the following combination of characters in the tribe Exoristini: facial ridge with strong setae; occiput without rows of black setae behind postocular setae; R4+5 setulose dorsally from base nearly to crossvein r-m; apical scutellar setae erect."
