This one I would place in the family Bibionidae.

Even better, it is a species of Bibio. Maybe Theo can tell which one. :)

And finally, I noticed on the above photograph something which looks like grains of sand on the leaf in front of the fly. Is this coincidence or could there be some connection? Here is an enlargement of the centre area, not very clear I'm afraid but perhaps it helps.
