Hello everyone,

I photographed this hoverfly yesterday in the Black Forest, south-west Germany. I estimate the size at 9 to 10 mm. Unfortunately I only have this view. I think it's a male of Cheilosia variabilis, but I'm not sure. Can you help me?

Greetings Siggi

You could be right; the wings are relatively long and darkened, as one would expect. However, with few details on legs, face and antennae, it is difficult to be sure in this large genus.

Hi Karsten,

many thanks for your response. What irritated me the most was that the fourth tergit has a different color. I haven't seen that before. So I will write the name with a "cf."

Greetings, Siggi
