Am I right in thinking this is Dilophus febrilis ? Found in South Cumbria, 18/10/2022.

Hi Duncan, no - it's a male Bibio clavipes or longipes.
(To be sure we'll need a dorsal view of a wing.)

Yes Duncan, it helps: male Bibio clavipes.
(wings milk-white, pterostigma doesn't reach the costal cell, "De zwarte vlieg bibio longipes" by Theo Zeegers).
