I wished we had a straight look at the antenna to exactly estimate the length ratio of segment 3 to 1+2. A good lateral look at the genitals of the male would also be helpful. But I think we see enough to apply the key either in van Veen's Hoverflies of Northwest Europe (https://books.goo...&hl=de) or in https://zoologica..._et_al.pdf. I get to C. intermedium, too.
I took photos of a male in the Black Forest foothills on 22 July, so also a bit late!
