Found at Mayville Ledge Beech-Maple Woods SNA in east-central Wisconsin in northern USA on 31.VII.2021. Found projecting 3-4mm out of trunk of debarked fallen hardwood tree in mixed hardwood forest. Looked relatively fresh, so presumably the adult had emerged not too long before I found the exuvium. Initially I presumed it was dipteran. Coleoptera was suggested on Bugguide. Confirmation/correction appreciated.

Just wanted to give an update on this. I got confirmation from Even Dankowicz that this is genus Symmerus in Ditomyiidae. I recently got pics of an adult eclosing from such an exuvium - https://www.flick...078261696/.

There are also similar images out on iNat - https://www.inatu...id=1011029
