Thread subject: :: Robberfly in Southern France

I took this photo in the Gard in Southern France in August. It was perching on a stone and making sorties from there to chase other insects. The habitat was garrigue - dry scrub woodland on limestone. Sorry about the quality of the photo. The insect was about 20mm long. Any clues to its identity?
