Hello,
I photographed this fly in San Giovanni (BZ), Italy, 1000m a.s.l. on July 12th 2021. I think it is a
Chrysopilus, but is it possible to identify its species from these photos?

In principle, a very nice female Ch. splendidus !
One can nicely see the greenish colour on the abdomen. The only problem is there is a cryptic species from France (torrentium), of which we don’t know the female.
I wouldn’t bother because nobody can tell. As long as the male of torrentium has not been found in Italy, let’s go for splendidus.

I usually identify this species by having dark femora, while being generally simiar to asiliformis.

That is corrct. The new “Fieldguide to the flies with three puvilli of northwestern Europe, to appear next week in Dutch and early 2022 in English” mentions another instructive feature: eye is green in living asiliformis, red in most other species.
