I pictured this Asilidae in Belgium on 2021-08-04 and thinked possible to have a Eutolmus rufibarbis, male.
I have a problem with setae color under hypopygium ... Here they are black !
On the website for Asilidae identification I see they are red ...
Can we ID this specimen up to the species ?

I read on the website and in the databases that Machimus intermedius (Holmgren, 1852) is a synonyme of Machimus setibarbis (Loew, 1849) ...
Can you confirm it ?
Machimus intermedius (Holmgren, 1852) isn't known by INPN nor Fauna Europaea ..., only Machimus setibarbis (Loew, 1849).
In Gbif.org we have it as on observations.be !

Thank you very much again for your Identification !!!

It is a long story... the synonymy was faulty but there is a problem with the taxon. It might be M. caliginosus as well but no males are known from that species with a messy result that in most ID works authors mixed up several species. From M. intermedius males are known and until further notice it is the name we use in Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands. We are working on several publications. On observation.be you can find quite some observations.
