Thread subject: Diptera.info :: Polistes bischoffi?

Hello,
I found this waspnest in Malta (Southern Europe).
Someone on a Dutch forum suggested Polistes bischoffi, but he wasn't sure.
Is this a P. bischoffi or should I keep it as Polistes sp.?

Hmmm...difficult. Now I think it is P. dominulus, but still not sure :o

Most probable it is Polistes gallicus (the former foederatus). P. bischoffi is excluded, because it has dark antennae. What you can see, are all males.

Polistes gallicus is synonym Polistes dominulus?
Name at present dominulus?

No, nomenclature is more problematic. There has been a big change in the 80th.
Former P. gallicus is now P. dominulus
Former P. foederatus is now P. gallicus
Both are similar in color etc, but gallicus is more slender. It occurs only in the mediterranean area, whereas dominulus also reaches Central Europe. I am not really sure with my diagnosis, because dominulus is also possible, but some details on the head of the males are more typical for gallicus.

Never heard Polistes dominula. P. dominulus is the correct spelling, as far as I know.
