The attached photo was taken on 1st July 07 in South East England. Basking on a leaf in a hedgerow on the edge of a copsed woodland.

I would be grateful for any suggestions.

Very difficult to tell, difficult to see the details.

The eyes look hairy, if so, it might be Phryxe nemea.
On the other hand, the jizz seems different.

I haven't thought about this before, but is it common that the bristles on the upper part of the face goes like in a zig zag pattern?

The specimen is a female and the bristles you mentioned are not considered to be in 1 row (but in several). That's why we don't look it as an zig-zag pattern.
Matter of how badly you have be educated, as guees
