The pictures are from today. The most beautiful fly I have ever seen.

Stratiomyiidae, I'd say Sargus, but a weird one, ask Martin Hauser.

Aha! It seems like the right family! :D But isn't it supposed to be written Stratiomyidae (1 i)?

My book suggests S. maculatus. The description fits, except for the fact that this specimen is almost twice as long...:o

I have commented before on my way of spelling.
I correct misspellings, whether the Code allows me or not.
I will understand you if you spell with one i, and I think you did when I wrote it with two ii.

Of course I understand :) Just wanted to be sure. I'm new in this "business" after all...

It is Sargus maculatus (Lindner, 1936), Only known from Cyprus and Israel. It is a rare species, gratulation!
Cheers

Great! I even have the specimen! It died about an hour after I took this pictures. :D But the book still bugs me... It says that the length of S. maculatus is 10 mm, and mine is 18. Typo?
