I found a large swarm of this rather neat Platypezidae today. Swarming at the edge of woodland 28/10/2007, Hookagate, Shropshire, UK.

I know this a long shot, but can anyone suggest which genus/species it might be. Note the very hairy appendages behind the halteres.

If anyone wants a specimen I have several spares.

Hi Nigel - This is a platypezid look-alike - Simuliidae. The antennae are typically nematoceran.

Tony, Oh yes, I didn't notice the antenna :o Those markings give it a very very good Platypezidae look. :D
