Photographed this small fly at the coast today. Ballito, KZN, South Africa. I think it is a Milichiidae. Would like to confirm and progress if possible. 2 Pics.

Not Milichiidae. Ulidiidae or close to them.

Lonchaeidae, I think, which is in the same superfamily as Ulidiidae.

yes Lonchaeidae - Very interesting specimen! with that very long antennal postpedicel and shining black frons it looks like one of the
Lonchaea togoensis group of species - which I dont think have been previously recorded from South Africa.
Did you keep the specimen by any chance?

Sorry Ian, I did not collect. I am visiting here for a few more days and will keep an eye out with a view to collect. Philip
