Calliphoridae? Muscidae? Tachinidae? I would have said Calliphoridae, but the male's eyes are dichoptic. M vein appears to bend - you can just see this on the females right wing.

Another picture from my mother, who says sorry about the quality - new camera, still getting used to it. Taken September 2007, inland Australia.

Any thoughts?

I am guessing tachinid - but would be nice to see the specimen ;)

Yes - they've got quite a tachinidy ruff. I am sure mum would have been delighted to collect for you, but it's too late now - she and dad are off up the central Queensland coast.

The station (Australian equivalent of ranch) these were photographed is turning up some interesting entomology - a new species of beetle there recently for instance. My father was also impressed by the fact that they had two and a half helicopters in the garage which they use as runabouts (the half is to provide spare parts).
