a great number of these flies occupied logs and walls of old wooden houses on the seashore. Anthomyiidae? ...

I think so.
I think it is Fucellia fucorum

I found in the i-net that this genus is typical for marine coasts, and that F. fucorum is more abundant in Northern regions.
