Thread subject: Diptera.info :: Eristalis similis or pertinax? -> E. pertinax

Hi
This fly is from late October (Vienna, Austria), could it be
E. similis? I don't know when that species flies during the year.

This should be a female of
E. similis according to the long pterostigma. The colour of the hind tibiae also matches well (compare
https://www.flick...406901344/).

I see your point:
E. pertinax has a rather long pterostigma, too (a fact that I overlooked), and is characterized by yellow front and middle tarsi. Looking at the second photo, this might be the case also here, at least the middle tarsus is yellow. In his key, Mark van Veen states that
similis females look much like
pertinax (but should have darker feet, like this male
https://diptera.i...d_id=42019). So I retract my
similis and change to
pertinax. We learn: never forget to look at the feet :S

Due to this thread I learned a lot, also the features of the other common Eristalis. So, helpful it was either way :)
