Hi,
In a July night of 2015 I observed this mosquito female laying eggs in a water basin. The eggs formed a nice little raft. I would really like to know the species - is it our common
Culex pipiens?
Thanks for help, Sundew

Culex for sure, and most likely
pipiens

Thank you very much, Tony! I have no
Culex key, and in our region 6 species are said to occur:
hortensis, martinii, modestus, pipiens, territans, torrentium. Can any of them be excluded with certainty?

It's not
modestus, which has a much shorter hind basitarsus. Nor
martinii, which has no pale bands on the abdomen. Nor
hortensis or
territans which have pale
apical bands on the abdominal segments. Which leaves
pipiens and
torrentium. To separate these species, characters of the male genitalia appear to be the most reliable features.
