Hi, I hope these pics are good enough, my only real reason for thinking this is Eristalis similis is the very strong pterostigma on the wings.

Any suggestions welcomed! :D

Location: Lincoln UK

Habitat: Garden location on Dahlia species, sandy soil.

Date: 22nd September 2007.

Thanks!

Unfortunately... the front tarsi are yellow, therefore its E. pertinax.

Thank you John! That is one thing I di pick up recently, the feet colour, but I did not know if E. similis also had the same coloured feet. :|

Nope, black. And E. pertinax is the only other species that can have such an elongated pterostigma, besides E. similis.

Thanks again, it is good to know these things! I now wish I had printed out the Eristalis key when it was online. ;)

I believe Mark van Veen's key should be online still, though I have no idea where...

Hmmm, I thought perhaps it was taken off because he was launching a new book. I have searched, looked on Google Scholar too, no luck! I don't know if I could justify buying a book, but I guess we can't really expect these things for free.

blowave: I've got a copy of that key, but don't think I should put it online, as I didn't write it!
I've sent you a 'private message' via this site about emailing it to you.
