I have been looking at what visits the orchid Spiranthes romanzoffiana that is now blooming in Juneau, Alaska on August 18. It is our latest blooming orchid and is being visited by male bumblebees. Of interest is a Syrphidae bumble bee mimic is also visiting the flowers. I would like to know the lowest taxonomic level of this fly. It looks like Volucella bombylans to me.

No Volucella. Maybe Eristalis intricaria

Thanks so much Gerard. Apparently there are several records for Eristalis anthophorina in Alaska.
