This is my first posting, I've just registered in Diptera.info so I can learn from you all ;).
This shot was made in June, quite near from Lisbon, about 400 m high. It is a small mediterranean forest and the fly was on a flower of a wild carrot. I think it is a Volucella zonaria, but I may be quite wrong.

Volucella zonaria. The brown scutellum and brown spots at the front of the abdomen are good characters to define this species.
