Hello,

I took this picture today in western germany. The body of the midge was about 1cm long, perhaps a bit longer. The most similar thing I found in the gallery was Molophilus. What is it?

This female crane fly superfacially looks like one of the North America species in the genus Gnophomyia . There are nine species in the genus Gnophomyia currently recorded in Europe.

Hello,

thank you for the answer. According to the Catalogue of the Craneflies of the World, there are only two species in germany: G. lugubris and G. viridipennis. G. viridipennis looks very simily to this specimen. But I wasn't able to find pictures of G. lugubris. So I think I will sort the picture as "Gnophomyia cf. viridipennis".
