Stuck keying this one out. I keyed to Polietes based on it having haired anepimeron, palpi not spoon shaped, arista plumose, M vein straight. Having said this the calypter does look broad perhaps atypical of Polietes? Any help appreciated.

I have used a different key for this and come to Phaonia valida. If anyone thinks this is wrong I would welcome the feedback

The anepimeron looks bare. The anepisternum and katepimeron have hairs.

Here is tibia 3 looking at the anterodorsal surface. The only pd seta I can see is the longer near apical one along the top edge in this view.

I will also need a close up of the wing, I suspect the m-vein is curving upwards

ok
is it possible to put something white behind the arista so that I can see the hairs
and to make this quick I also need
close up of tibia 2 to see p setae
close up of pulvilli on legs 1 and 2
close up of eyes to see eye hairs (side view best)
Close up of notopleura to see n setae and if there are hairs around them

ok
pulvilli large ok, eye hairs long ok, notopleuron hairy ok
It would be useful to see the end of the arista (some white paper behind it would show up the hairs quite well), just out of focus and also if sternite 1 is setulose
I now have 1 species in mind

The arista is fine, for the sternites I would like to see sternite 1, so you need a view from above to show the sternites in series, sternite 1 should be hairy

no I need to see the sternites see last photo on this link
http://www.dipteristsforum.org.uk/t3759-Phaonia-errans%3F.html
1st sternite at the top - must be hairy for errans
WE have a choice of 2 flies valida and errans, there are characteristics of both! which is why it is taking so long

I must confess I did wonder why you asked for a view from above. No matter, here is a view of the sternites.
