I wonder: is Exhyalanthrax synonymous with Thyridanthrax?

no... they are two different valid genus. :)

We can have:

Exhyalanthrax afer (Fabricius, 1794) (= Anthrax fimbriata Meigen 1804)
Exhyalanthrax collarti Fran?ois, 1962
Exhyalanthrax melanchlaenus (Loew, 1867)
Exhyalanthrax muscarius (Pallas, 1818) (= Thyridanthrax innocens Austen 1936; Anthrax vagans Loew 1862)

AND

Thyridanthrax alphonsi Sanchez Terr?n & Rold?n Bravo, 2000
Thyridanthrax elegans (Wiedemann in Meigen, 1820)
Thyridanthrax fenetratus (Fall?n, 1814)
Thyridanthrax hispanus (Loew, 1869)
Thyridanthrax loustaui Andr?u Rubio, 1961
Thyridanthrax nebulosus (Dufour, 1852)
Thyridanthrax perspicillaris (Loew, 1869)
Thyridanthrax polyphemus (Wiedemann in Meigen, 1820)

Some weeks ago I send in photographs for the gallery, under the name Thyridanthrax afer! It looks very similar to yours. I used this name because it is used at a Dutch site (waarneming.nl). I must suppose they are incorrect, then?

Incidentally, what is the decisive difference between the two genera?

The correct for your images of T. afer would be Exhyalanthrax afer! Evenhus changed from the former Thyridanthrax to Exhyalanthrax genus. IN Seguy we can find yet the Thyridanthrax afer... but after 1991, Evenhuis, that made a great study on bombyliids, changed the genus.

So I would suggest that ID must be changed...

Concerning the difference.. i don?t have here the Evenhuis book. :( In this book I know we can see the explanatin of the difference. Let?s go wait for Gibbs.

According to faunaeur.org there is just Exyhalanthrax afer.
http://www.faunaeur.org/index.php - see in name search and in SPECIES field write afer.
