Thread subject: Diptera.info :: Tachinidae, Gymnosoma? from Romania

Hi,

last week succeded to make some photos on this Gymnosoma? , can be identified further?
Baile Herculane (limestone, Fagus forest, ~400 m). size aprox ~6mm.

Definitely Gymnosoma but I can't go any further than that because they are a very difficult genus - even with a specimen. The genitalia and the degree of dusting on the frons and the thorax are all very significant features when making an identification :)

thanks for the answer.
no photo of genitalia, photo of frons exist but... anyway i have learned something.

AS Chris rightly put it, difficult to tell.
It does not look like rotundatum, more likely either clavatum or dolycoridis. However, this is guesswork and not science.
In any case, a male.

this the only photo from the face. maybe help if not... another try (maybe i will collect this fly).

This is definitely NOT rotundatum, but either dolycoridis or maybe clavatum. It helped, but the conclusion remeans the same.
