Foulness 15/7/2007
Habitat: Saltings
Length ~15mm
I'm fairly sure this is Tabanidae genus Atylotus
Looking through previous forum postings suggests that
latistriatus is the only British sp with pubescent eyes, and that the habitat is right.
Can anyone confirm the ID for sure.

The pubescent eye feature holds only for the female sex, in males Atylotus eyes are always hairy. And this a male.
Nevertheless, this is undoubtedly A. latistriatus.
Probably quite rare in the UK, but I'm too lazy to reach for Stubbs at the moment.
Congratulations. This species is active till the end of August
