Possibly Microchaetina valida, an American genus of tribe Dexiini (family Tachinidae). It was described in 1892 as a Rhinophora.

Hello John,

Though it´s a long time ago, I found your answer to my question and I like to thank you for your reaction! My computer crashed in June and I don´t have a photoprogram anymore to make the pictures nicer. Now I'm also making a photobook from our journey to USA so I didn't look at this site anymore. I'm sorry.
By the way: I found it also near Cathedral Gorges in Nevada :)

Regards though,
Hedy
