Thread subject: Diptera.info :: Mexican Tachinidae

Horrible photo, I know, but I don't have more...
It was took by my father in Los Azufres, Michoacan, a month ago. By his estimation of the size I deduce that was about the size of an european Tachina grossa - maybe 2 cm lenght.
Any help will be very welcome.

Probably Tachinini. I would need a clearer picture. Compare Pararchytas and Archytas metallicus.

Thanks John. A friend of mine also suggested Leschenaultia, that seems to match. I will compare the other genus too.

Nearctic Epalpus tend to have pale spots on tergite 5 (tip of abdomen). Neotropical species are more diverse.

This general appearance is common in American Tachinini. As you go south the holarctic Tachina-like genera give way to more round and spiny forms.

You are right that Leschenaultia is similar. I think this is not in that group, but I could be wrong.
