I thought maybe a Tipula rufina, due to the black stripe on the side of the thorax and a female from the ovipositor. Is that correct?

Best wishes,
Martin

T. rufina should be correct, the black stripe is said to be distinctive (http://www.nature...ula-rufina and other websites).

Thanks Sundew. There are no previous records of Tipula rufina in my county of Suffolk on the UK National Biodiversity Network system, although that is probably due to under-recording rather than real scarcity.

John Kramer has now also confirmed the ID on the Dipterists Forum.
