I only got the one shot of this fly.
It was on a Eucalyptus leaf near a wetlands area in Victoria Australia.
Any help in the ID would be appreciated.

Hi Lawrie.
1. As a first step you have to move fly from Syrphidae forum to Diptera forum - it isn't Syrphidae and post may be overlooked.
2. My test, probable answer is female of Dolichopodidae, Sciapodinae. To get confirmation (or not) of this opinion, I advise you to change post name to "Dolichopodidae?"

Hmm, it doesn't really look doli-like, but I agree that superfamily Empidoidea is right.

I wouldn't rule out Athericidae or Chrysopilus (Rhagionidae)... can't see the wingvenation though... :(

The whole build shouts HYBOTIDAE but I am unfamiliar with the Australian fauna. Wait till Adrian shows up and throws in a name.

THE only specialist who knows Empidoidea of Ausralia is Daniel Bickel.

I think that Dolichopodidae is most likelt for this one. Without a view of the wing veins its a bit difficult to be sure but its general stance and 'jiz' suggests its a Doli rather than another empidoid.
There is just a small chance that it could be a hybotid as there are several ocydromiine genera in the Austropeza / Oropezella area which look a bit like this.
If you see it again, get another photo please

I still disagree with Dolichopodidae (but I'm not familiar with the australian fauna at all!). My first gues s would be Empididae/near Hemerodromiinae :)

It would not be a very typical Hemerodromiinae:- the arching of the thorax is not strong enough, even for Chelipodini and more tellingly, the front 2 pairs of legs are too close together. I have seen some of the Australian Hemerodromiinae which seem to be similar to those of New Zealand, with which I am more familiar. Take a look at a NZ species in the gallery at http://www.diptera.info/photogallery.php?photo_id=1100 and look at thoracic arching and spacing of the legs.
I have to admit that the antennae do look hemerodromiine though.
Without a better view it will remain indet methinks:- unless Dan knows it

I sent the photo to Dan Bickel who knows the Australian doli's very well. He doesn't think its a doli and suggests it might be an ocydromiine empid so possibly my earlier thought that there was some small chance of it being in the Austropeza / Oropezella was right after all. Embarassing really as I desribed Austropeza in the first place!
