3 June 2007 New Brunswick Canada.
A very useful, and convenient, character for identifying female
Chrysops spp. is the absence (top image
C. calvus)) or presence (bottom
C. mitis) of a yellow pollinose stripe on the clypeus. These character states readily divide the North American spp. into 2 more manageable groupings.

As nicely illustrated.
In the Old World, unfortunately, the majority is of the lower type.
