Thread subject: Diptera.info :: Stratiomys ID from Finland --> Stratiomys longicornis, first for Finland!

Hello everyone,

This is my first post here and already I'm in the need of your expertise and assistance.

The specimen in the photos was photographed in Lappeenranta, SE Finland, in 2013-06-09. I am a bit baffled, as it does not resemble very much the only species found in Finland (Stratiomys singularior), but instead has some characteristics of S. longicornis. The only problem is that I did not manage to collect it (even though I tried), as I didn't have my net with me during a small trip.

My question is: have I possibly found a new for Finland and can it be confirmed just from these few photos (more to come).

Cheers,
-Harry

Excellent news, Paul! My confidence level is going steadily upwards. Any other opinions on this?

This would be a new species for Finland, and that is why I am being extra cautious.

Well, it is known from Sweden and many central European species pop up these days in Finland.

Thanks for your input, Theo. :)

After some discussion (e.g. with Paul) I have come to the conclusion to call it! This indeed is a Stratiomys longicornis, the first for Finland! And what a beauty it is! :)

All combined features seem to fit, and e.g. the length of the antennae is a single definitive feature. No one has said anything to ID it otherwise.

A great way to start dwelling deeper into the world of Diptera!

Cheers,
-Harry
