Hi All,
Can anyone say whether the Tabanus in these photos is bromius or cordiger? It looks like bromius to me, but some of the characters mentioned in Stubbs & Drake do not fit very well. In particular, there are two unconnected shining black patches on the frons, but the top one is the wrong shape for cordiger. Also the palps appear to be white haired, with little sign of black hairs. The antenna are dark, but do not appear to be completely black. The eyes had NO band in the live specimen, although Stubbs & Drake say this can be absent in bromius.
Very confusing!

Congratulations with cordiger !!!
No doubt: broad gap between the eyes, black antennae, and very stout palpi.

Thanks Theo,
I have never seen cordiger before, so thanks for the confirmation. I caught this one on a window in my home in teh middle of Shrewsbury town.
