This was the third of only three flies that I photographed on a recent trip to Madeira. This one was found in Monte Mar Palace Hotel garden, Ponta Delgada on the north coast on 23 Nov 2014. I realise that identification may not be possible but will include several images and will be grateful for any suggestions.

As far as I can see this is Stomorhina lunata (Calliphoridae).I'm not sure which other species of Rhiniinae occur on Madeira. Did you keep the specimen?

Many thanks Tony. I DO indeed have the specimen if it is of any interest. I would be happy to send it if you want it. The 2008 List of Terrestrial fungi, flora and fauna of Madeira and Selvagens archipelagos lists just 9 Calliphorids for Madeira with S. lunata as the only native species! (The others are Calliphora vomitoria, C. vicina, Chrysomya albiceps, C.megacephala, Lucilia sericata, Pollenia angustigena, P.pediculata and P. rudis are the other eight). Thus on the basis of the species known to be here there are no other alternative Rhiniinae!

I can't spot anything which suggests it isn't Stomorhina lunata, so I think we're safe with that. But if you want to pop it in the post, I'll happily check it for you.

Many thanks Tony. I have now looked at it closely and it certainly seems correct to me! I do in fact still have some other specimens to send to you so will probably add this to them.
