Hello!

This male Tabanus (yesterday on a meadow, Ostwestfalen/Germany) was really big, I think clearly over 20 mm! I have never seen such a large Tabanid. Could this be T. sudeticus? Thanks!

I believe that not T. sudeticus. By the drawing of thorax and abdomen it seems T. autumnalis.

Thanks! I have had T. autumnalis here, but it was much smaller than this one...

I think the first posterior cell is closed, which would make it T eggeri. The females I have seen in France are pretty big - about 25mm. I've also had T autumnalis to 25mm in Essex, but again female, not males, and your beast is male.

*Edit* Changed my mind - I'll vote for T autumnalis - the abdominal pattern is right, and I think it is a fold, not a vein, making the cell look closed.

Many thanks! Anyway: It was a very impressive fly!
