Thread subject: Diptera.info :: Tabanidae for ID, SW Spain --> Hybomitra zaballosi, female

These pictures are not mine. Were taken by a friend (José Fernández) in Badajoz, Extremadura, SW Spain on 06.04.2014. He asked for help and all I can say for sure is that it reminds me of
Hybomitra. Any chance of knowing the species or at least confirming the genus? Sorry, no better pictures of the abdomen :(
Thanks a lot for whatever help! :) :)

I'm sort of guessing, without looking at the full description in Portillo, at
Hybomitra zaballosi! Wait for Theo.
If not, then bucket of cold water for me :D

We can share the bucket of cold water, Steve :D The reason I posted pictures from a friend even if they don't show all the characters necessary for ID is precisely because there might be something really good hidden here ;). I told my friend so. I got the Spanish keys by Portillo and they took me directly to
Hybomitra zaballosi. I was astonished. But my knowledge of Tabanidae is worse than extremely limited. I did need the opinion of Theo and the other experts :) Only the abdomen doesn't convince me. But no proper pictures of the abdomen were taken :( Don't blame my friend though ;) He was about to be bitten :D And he didn't know he was about to be bitten by one of the finest Tabanids (if it is confirmed) in Spain :D :D :D :D
I have to apologize for not saying my thoughts at once. But I didn't want to condition your minds ;)
So, thanks a lot, Steve ;) Let's wait for Theo and Libor and see what they have to say about this cutie.

Libor says nothing :D I do not know that species and have no literature for checking the description...

Well, indeed it is something like that.
I have only seen the male.
So I need to check the literature. Come back to you !

Thanks once more for taking the time to confirm this, Theo!! :) :) This is superb!! The only cite I know is the one by Portillo in Valladolid province, when he described the species ;) Truely astonishing finding. My friend should be proud of almost being bitten by such a rarity! :D :D :D
About the question, I guess he needs to stop liking to photograph insects! :D :D :D

OK, what about I buy his camera ?
Amazing find indeed, apparently the second place on earth where it has been found!
